Mission Impossible: Defeat the UConn Women in the Final Four

By - Kris Fletcher

The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame snapped an 0-for-20 losing skid in defeating the Tennessee Lady Volunteers Monday night in the Dayton, Ohio region final.

Their next mission may be a tad more difficult.

Sunday night, they take on the defending champion Connecticut Huskies in the Final Four. A team that the Irish have already lost to three times this season. A team that's coming off a 75-40 slaughter of the Duke Blue Devils in the Elite Eight.

Notre Dame will need the luck of the Irish to keep it from becoming four looses to the Huskies this season.

In the other semi-final game, it will be the Stanford Cardinal taking on the Texas A&M Aggies. Unless the Irish and Aggies pull off upsets, the championship game will probably be a rematch of last years final between UConn and Stanford. The Huskies won that close contest 53-47.

However, if there's a team that can beat UConn, it's Stanford. The Cardinal snapped the Huskies record 90-game winning streak back in December, winning by a final of 71-59. I seriously doubt UConn has forgotten about that.

The Huskies are led by Maya Moore, who this season became only the second four-time All-American in NCAA women's basketball history. It was the third straight year she was a unanimous choice.

Geno Auriemma's ladies always seem to turn it up a notch come tournament time. Since 1991, the Huskies have been to the Final Four twelve times, and won it all seven times. Needless to say, it's going to be hard for any of the three teams remaining to stop this squad from winning yet another title.

So Notre Dame, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to knock off the greatest dynasty in women's college sports history on Sunday night.

Good luck.
