Yao, 30, suffered a fracture in his left ankle back in December. The injury required season-ending surgery. He had played in only five games since the 2008-09 season due to a variety of injuries.

The 7-foot-6 center officially became a restricted free agent on July 1st.

He was the #1 overall pick in the 2002 NBA Draft, and averaged 19 points and 9.2 rebounds per contest for his career.
