Potential Landing Spots For NFL Free Agent QBs

By - Brian Harrington

I heard ESPN NFL Insider John Clayton on local sports radio last night talking about the labor dispute progress. In that conversation, the host asked him where he thought some of the big name, free agent quarterbacks would end up. I thought I would break down his answers.

1. Kevin Kolb to the Arizona Cardinals - He said this was pretty much a no-brainer but that it would come in the form of a trade, sending Arizona cornerback Dominique Rogers-Cromartie to the Eagles in return for Kolb (and possibly drafts picks). Pretty good fit for Kolb in that this team has a great receiving corps and a pretty stout defense. Could definitely make a legitimate run at the NFC West with this deal.

2. Matt Hasselbeck to the Tennessee Titans - Clayton all but referred to this as a sure thing as well, I think it's a great fit for both sides. I really like Hasselbeck as a QB and a person, I think he'd be great for the city of Nashville and the perfect mentor for rookie Jake Locker. Only real question here is whether Hasselbeck is willing to play the role of a mentor knowing he'll really only be needed for one, maybe two seasons.

3. Donovan McNabb to the Minnesota Vikings - I kinda raised my eyebrows at this one. Although I think with Ponder waiting in the wings, going with a veteran QB who's closer to the end of his career than the beginning is probably the best idea. I still think McNabb got a raw deal in Washington, so I'd like to see him go out on a higher note.

4. Vince Young to the Miami Dolphins - This one kind of boggles the mind as well. The quarterback situation in Miami is anything but stable though. With the almost certain end of Chad Pennington's career and the lackluster progress of Chad Henne and Tyler Thigpin, I guess anything is worth trying. That being said, I still don't think Young has the heart to be an NFL starting quarterback.

5. Tarvaris Jackson and Matt Leinart to the Seattle Seahawks - According to Clayton, Pete Carroll is looking to completely overhaul this team, mainly on offense. This would certainly be a change, maybe not a good one, but a change nonetheless. Who knows, maybe Carroll can do for Leinart what he did for Mike Williams, make him slightly decent.

Clayton also went on to say that he thinks Kyle Orton will stay in Denver for now and possibly be traded later on around the trade deadline. Pretty interesting scenarios I think. Should make for an awesomely intense free agency period.

In closing, I'd like to add that it was pretty difficult to find an image of McNabb actually playing in a Redskins uniform. Also, who exactly will have dibs on #7 in Seattle?

  1. It will be interesting to see where all these guys end up. I would take it a step further as far as Vince Young goes and say he doesn't have the talent to be a starting NFL quarterback either.

  2. I've always liked matt Leinart, so I'd actually like to see Carroll work with him again. Leinart thrived in Carroll's system at USC, so getting back under his wing might be just what he needs to get his career back on track.

  3. Nice assessments guys. I agree with both of you.

I also agree that Hasselbeck would fit in well with Tennessee. I think he's got more left in the tank than people think.
