Harrington was hospitalized with a broken collar bone, a punctured lung and a laceration on his head. He is expected to remain in the hospital for several days.

Portland police said he was hit from behind just before 8:30 p.m. by a passing SUV driven by a 26-year-old man who remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. The driver was cited for following too close.

At a news conference yesterday afternoon, Harrington's father said his son was luckily wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

"The impact put him on top of the car," John Harrington said. "Joey ended up upside down and came down on his head and shoulder and then skidded off to the side."

In his six-year NFL career, Harrington threw for 79 touchdowns and 85 interceptions, while accumulating a 26-50 record as a starter. He last played in 2007 with the Atlanta Falcons.

  2. Harrington just had the misfortune of being drafted by Detroit. They turned everyone into bums back then.

  3. Oh Anonymous, you clever sage. Guy gets hit by a car, but let's blast him for getting drafted and forced to start by a team whose O-Line couldn't stop me and 3 cheerleaders from getting a shot at him.
