Uggla's Hit Streak Ends at 33 Games

By - Kris Fletcher

The longest hitting streak in the majors since 2006 came to an end today, as Atlanta Braves second baseman Dan Uggla went 0-3 with an RBI in a 6-5 loss to the Chicago Cubs.

His best chance to extend the streak came in the fifth, when second baseman Darwin Barney made a diving catch of Uggla's fly ball in shallow right field. Barney was fully extended when he made the grab in front of right fielder Tyler Colvin.

"I wasn't even looking at him," said Uggla of Barney. "I was looking at Colvin and thought it was going to drop in front of him, and the next thing I know Barney comes flying through."

"It was a good streak for him," Barney said. "He's a great player. I think our pitchers are happy though. They take a lot of pride in that, and I'm happy for them."

Uggla's 33-game streak passed Rico Carty's 31-game streak from 1970 as the longest in Atlanta history. The franchise record is 37 games held by Tommy Holmes for the 1945 Boston Braves.

When the streak began back on July 5th, Uggla was hitting just .173 for the season. His average now sits at .231. He also belted 15 home runs and drove in 32 over the course of the 33 games.

Heck of a run Dan. Heck of a run.

  1. Helluva streak he put together. He's been pounding the ball for a month. Been fun to watch.

  2. Great streak. Uggla's been one of my favorite players since he played for the Marlins. Nice to see him doing well.

  3. Yeah, I was hoping he'd make a run at the record, but 33 is still a great number. Thanks for the comments fellas.
