Cam Newton Will Fail in the NFL

I'm not gonna lie, I haven't been a fan of Cam "The Scam" Newton from day one. However, I'm all for giving someone a chance once they get to the professional level. After looking over some stats from his first two preseason games, I think they show Newton will fail as an NFL starting quarterback.

Newton's combined numbers thus far are 15 of 33 for 200 yards, 0 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. While that may not be horrible, it isn't by any means what you would like to see from the guy you took with the #1 overall pick in the draft. Which got me thinking of another quarterback that went #1 overall recently, JaMarcus Russell. So, I went ahead and did a little research.

Because Russell held out his rookie season, I had to take the numbers from his first couple of regular season starts, which came starting week 13 of the 2007-2008 season. Russell's combined numbers after two starts: 12/35 for 149 yards, 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions. Strikingly similar to Newton, and not in a good way.

I suppose this doesn't spell doom for him necessarily, but it doesn't bode well this early in his career either. I guess time will tell. I'm sure people are going to jump to his defense, but the guy has shown me absolutely nothing to even indicate he gives a damn if he does fail. Just as long as he gets paid. Ya know, like he did in college...

    My guess would be you could take peyton Manning's first 2 career starts and they would be similar as well. Almost all qbs struggle in the early going and go through growng pains, so I would say its a bit early to say if Newton will be a bust or not. Give the guy some time.

    Yet another example as to why this website sucks. Hatin on Newton before he's ever even gotten a chance to prove anything yet.

    I would agree it's a somewhat early to make an accurate prediction as to how Newton will do in the NFL. He reminds me of Vince Young in more ways than one, and we all see how that turned out.

    And "anonymous #2" says, "yet another example," which would indicate you've been to the site more than once, so if it "sucks" so bad, why do you keep coming back?

    I agree with the V.Y. comparison. I just don't see Newton having the right skill set to flourish in the NFL. I see him being mediocre at best.

    Peyton Manning's numbers his first 2 NFL starts: 42-70, 490 yards, 2 tds, 6 ints and a lost fumble. How'd that end up turning out? To be attempting to make the arguement that Newton will fail after just 2 lousy preseason starts is flatout asinine.

    Be that as it may, my problem is actually more to do with his attitude than his numbers. I'd much rather have some one like Manning, who put in 4 strong years at UT, over a kid who stole a laptop, got caught with it, then left school before he was going to be suspended. Then has one flash-in-the-pan season under highly questionable circumstances, which are still under NCAA review. On a related note, 11 of the last 14 top picks since 1998 (P. Manning) have been quarterbacks. of those, only Eli and Peyton have Super Bowl wins and only four (Eli, Peyton, Palmer, and Vick) have made a pro bowl. So they deck is stacked against him from the start. I'm not guaranteeing he's going to fail, simply that I don't see him having the gumption to succeed. It takes a lot more than hype and a skill set to make it in this league.
