Top 5 Quarterbacks in the NFL Today

By - Shayne Carnahan

Obviously, there are a lot of good quarterbacks in the National Football League. Then, there's the truly elite. The cream of the crop. The best in the business.

When you think of elite quarterbacks, you think of guys that can get it done in the fourth quarter. When their team is down late, they come through with a game winning drive to pull out the win.

Well, all five of these guys have proven they can do just that. Whether it be on the biggest stage or the season opener, these guys get it done!

With that, here are my top 5 QBs in the NFL today:

1. Tom Brady

Brady is the Cinderella story of the league. He was drafted in the sixth round and not expected to do much but backup Drew Bledsoe. However, Bledsoe went down, Brady stepped in, and the rest is history. He's been to five Super Bowls, winning three of them. Plus, he led New England to an undefeated regular season in 2007. Not to mention the fact that he 5,235 yards passing with 39 touchdowns to only 12 interceptions in 2011. Enough said.

2. Peyton Manning

I put Brady at one, so Manning has to be two. Although he's been to fewer Super Bowls with two, and only won one. Regardless, he's one of the best. Manning is best known for his last second heroics. He has the uncanny ability to win a game in the fourth quarter. I mean, if I had to pick one quarterback to put in with the game hanging in the balance, it would be Manning every time. We'll just have to wait and see if his magic carries over to Denver.

3. Ben Roethlisberger

Big Ben's been hurt as of late, but that's mostly the offensive lines fault. Luckily, the Steelers addressed that problem in the draft. He's been to three Super Bowls, winning two of them. He always delivers a playoff season, but that might be harder to do this year with Hines Ward retiring. Still, if the line can keep him upright, I expect the Steelers to be right in the thick of the playoff hunt.

4. Aaron Rodgers

Rodgers is 1-0 in the Super Bowl, and the Packers ALMOST went undefeated in 2011. Of course, so did Brady and the Patriots in '07. The difference being, the Pats actually made it the Super Bowl before they lost. However, I have to give Rodgers props. He's managed to do what a lot of people thought he couldn't do -- replace the great Brett Favre. No denying the fact that Rodgers has filled Favre's shoes perfectly.

5. Drew Brees

Any guy that can go to an organization that has had bad luck with quarterbacks and turn them around and take them to their first Super Bowl, deserves to be in the top 5. That's not the only reason why though. Brees is the very definition of the word leader. If you ever watch a Saints game, you'll notice that he's a leader both on the field AND on the sidelines. He always keeps his teammates focused on the task at hand. That's a quality I want in my QB.

So there you have it. My top 5 quarterbacks in the NFL today.

  1. Peyton's not number 1, so its inaccurate from the start.

  2. I don't understand how exactly you came up with this top-5. I can't really argue with the fact that Brady is at 1. I wouldn't necessarily put him at 1 on my list but he's good enough to where I can't argue against it either. But after 1 you're all over the place. Manning didn't play AT ALL last season so how is he at 2? Roethlisberger is pretty good, but no way is he better than Rodgers OR Brees, so he shouldn't be on the list at all. It seems like you just put them in order by Super Bowl appearances except for Manning who you must have just given a pass to because he's your personal favorite. Only 3 of these 5 deserve to be on the list and it could certainly be argued that none of THEM are where they should be.

  3. After the seasons Rodgers and Brees had in 2011, you putting them at FOUR and FIVE is laughable. Manning didn't even take a snap last season. HOW IS HE TWO?!?!?

  4. Oh please tell me there's not yet another Tom Brady ass kisser writing for this site. Kris already has that department covered. He doesn't need any help. Brady IS NOT the best quarterback in the league. Brees and Rodgers are BOTH better. Manning's better too, and that's after missing all of last season.

  5. Oh, where to start. I'm good with Brady being at 1, while Brees and Rodgers have had a great last couple of seasons, Brady has been consistantly good. I do, however, find it amusing that most of the people who bag on Brady and the Patriots are fans of teams that would kill for a QB like that.

Manning being #2? No. And I'd say that id he DID play last season. Manning has slowly been on the decline, he's nearing the end of his career. It'll show this season in Denver.

Roethlisberger? No. No. No. No. No. No. No. If he's on this list because he's better than his line makes him look, then Cutler should be on here too. And if he's on this list because the has 2 Super Bowl rings, then so should Eli.

I can think of at least 3 QBs in the league that are better than Ben Roethlisberger. Eli Manning, Phillip Rivers, and Jay Cutler. And I loathe Rivers.
