It's Time For a Playoff System in College Football

By - Shayne Carnahan

It's been a major question in college football for some time. Should the NCAA switch from its current bowl game system to a playoff-type format?

In the current system, teams are ranked based on strength of schedule, record, and strength of conference.

Therein lies the problem.

What about teams like Boise State? They've had an almost flawless record over the last three seasons, yet they've never really had a chance to compete for the National Championship. Why? Because the teams within their own conference aren't very good. I believe they should have at least gotten a shot over that time span. If they had lost, oh well. But had they won, it would have been a huge victory for all the "little guys" of college football.

In the current system, unless you play in the SEC, Big 12, or PAC 12, you've basically got no chance of getting a National Championship opportunity. Even in the PAC 12, you almost have to be lucky to get in.

Take what just happened this past season. Alabama vs. LSU in a rematch. I'm sure everyone remembers how the first game went down, a 9-6 win for LSU -- one of the most boring games I watched all last season. Then, they played each other again in National Championship Game, and Alabama blew them out.

In my opinion, the game should have been LSU vs. OSU, because OSU deserved it more. They hadn't played LSU yet, and I believe they were a better overall team than Alabama. I'm an Oklahoma fan, and I still believe OSU got screwed out a National Championship opportunity.

If the NCAA does go to a playoff system, they should just keep it simple and do it like this:

The top two teams from each conference play for a conference championship, with the winners moving on to the national playoff bracket. If that happens, it'll leaves us with 12 teams and 6 games. One plays twelve, two plays eleven, and so on. That way, everyone has a chance -- and we don't constantly have teams getting screwed out of a title opportunity year-in and year-out.

I think a playoff system is coming, and I think it's coming sooner rather than later.

  1. I agree there should be a playoff, but you're crazy if you think Oklahoma State should have been in the title game over Alabama. OSU lost to IOWA STATE, a team with a losing record. That automatically removed them from the discussion, as it should have.

  2. There should definitely be a playoff, but the two best teams in college football played for the title last season. No doubt about it.

  3. I think even with a playoff the best teams still wont always be the ones in the championship game due to the fact of upsets. But I still think it would be very interesting to see it happen
