Biggest Losers From Recent NFL Drafts

The grading criteria here is simple. If 50% or more of your recent top picks are no longer on the club and/or you selected JaMarcus Russell -- you're a loser.

While all teams take chances, some take entirely too many. At the end of the day, the risk has to be lower than the potential reward. If not, you're sure to land on this type of list fairly often.

With that, here are my biggest losers.

1. Oakland Raiders

This one is a no-brainer. Recent drafts have seen the Raiders take these guys in the first round; 2006 - Michael Huff, 2007 - JaMarcus Russell, 2008 - Darren McFadden, 2009 - Darrius Heyward-Bey, and 2010 - Rolando McClain. Do you see a pattern here? I sure do. The only one that is still on the team is Darren McFadden. That's it. Simply put, you can't build a team like that. Oakland has grabbed some pretty good players in the later rounds such as Tyvon Branch and Denarius Moore, but the first round whiffs easily put them at No. 1.

2. Jacksonville Jaguars

Ohhh the poor Jags. They have missed on a ton of picks. Derrick Harvey, Blaine Gabbert, Reggie Nelson and Tyson Alualu have all been busts. Both Justin Durant and Mike Sims-Walker are gone, and the only guys that have been productive at all are Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton. You could make a case for Jacksonville being No. 1, but the big name busts with the Raiders is why the Jaguars come in at No. 2 on my list.

3. Buffalo Bills

The Bills find themselves in as big of a mess as the Jags. Coach Doug Marrone has a bunch of players that are not worthy of starting, but are. He has lost several to free agency as well. More importantly, Buffalo has blown all of their picks in recent drafts. Marshawn Lynch was dealt, Aaron Maybin underachieved, Leodis McKelvin has been a bust in general, and C.J. Spiller just came alive last season. Eric Wood is still around, but they lost Andy Levitre to the Titans. The offensive line was never fixed, and heading into this draft they could use everything but a center. They need to draft well this year, as they have spent a lot of money on free agents lately to offset the cost.

4. San Diego Chargers

I guess this is why the AFC West has become the worst division in football. The drafting by two of the four teams has been atrocious. Blowing first round picks is one of the reasons GM A.J. Smith was let go. That, and the late round gems he did find, he couldn't keep. Larry English, Ryan Mathews, Craig "Buster" Davis, Antoine Cason and Corey Liuget have been their past picks. Injuries have plagued this group, but even when on the field the only two that have even been somewhat productive are Mathews and Liuget.

5. New York Jets

The Jets are in a bad place right now. They have lost a lot of veterans, and a majority of those guys were recent first round picks. Darrelle Revis, Dustin Keller and Vernon Gholston are gone. Kyle Wilson and Mark Sanchez have underachieved. They hit on David Harris, but since 2007, he's basically it. The competitive depth just isn't there, and at this point, New York is in full-blown rebuilding mode. Nice job, Rex.

Not surprisingly, all of these teams are selecting in the top 11 of the upcoming draft, with the Jets owning two of the top 15 picks.
